BIOS

Short Bio

15-30 words

This is your tagline, 15-30 words. It describes what you're known for. It could be used in event programming like brochures, social media posts, posters, and other placements where space is limited.

Medium Bio

50-200 words

This is the standard bio that will be used most often. Imagine someone reading it over a microphone to introduce you for a speaking engagement (because it will be)—so write in third-person point-of-view.

This bio could also be used on publisher websites, on sales pages for your books, in detailed event programs, in social media posts that promote an event you're a part of, in the back cover or front matter of your book, at the end of an article you're featured in, and more.

Use dates instead of lengths of time; for example, say "since 2015" instead of "for ten years," so you don't have to update the bio each year.

Mention your most impressive awards and achievements, not all of them. Talk about your credentials, especially ones relevant to what your write.

Offer up some personal info that allows you to give a taste of your writing style. You could talk about where you grew up, your favourite hot drink when writing, your pet peeves at the grocery store—anything that feels like you

Long Bio

300-500 words

Alright, the long bio is optional and I know many authors will delete this section because even though you love writing, it can be difficult to write about yourself. But there are some benefits of the long bio.

When you get invited to be interviewed for a magazine, news outlet, or podcast, the person interviewing you can read your long bio for extra information. They'll want to ask you questions, and this gives them hints on what you like to talk about. Then, you might also get some superfan readers who find their way here. The long bio will make you feel like more of a real person, with more touchpoints to connect on. Connecting with readers is very important, after all. â€‹

Since this bio is less likely to be read out in front of an audience while you listen side-stage with a cringe on your face and sweaty armpits, it's a perfect opportunity to showcase your writing style. Industry professionals might even read this, so it could give them an indication of what it's like to work with you (or represent you).

So of course include everything in your medium bio above, and expand on the points. Feel free to elaborate on details for your published works, brag about all the awards you've won, talk about speaking events you've done, or even mention some highlights from your book events. Just be a human.
